Leap Into Literacy: The Final Stretch

Written by: Alex Whang

Alex is a Grade 12 student and Leap Into Literacy’s official social media intern for summer 2015.  A previous volunteer at the Branksome Hall/Rose Avenue campus for two years, she is excited to be taking on this new role.

As we head into our final days of Leap Into Literacy 2015, looking back on all we’ve accomplished is quite impressive to say the least. From improving our literacy skills, to making new friendships, to exploring new parts of the city, we’ve left no stone unturned. Although we have only three days of camp left, we have a jam packed final week of Leap with many new activities and end of camp celebrations. This last week of camp is perhaps our busiest yet!

Yesterday marked our first of two Leap Pan Am Games that’ll take place this week. It was a beautiful (and very hot) day up at Kortright Conservation Centre where grade 2-3 students from all three campuses came together to compete in the games. Volunteers, teachers, and students from all campuses were divided in to four different countries: Peru, Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. The different events included an obstacle course, pick up sticks, and banner painting among others. Witnessing the students and staff from each campus get to know each other better and demonstrate what teamwork really looks like was an absolute pleasure- it was truly something special. The day ended with a four way tug of war which tested the teamwork (and strength!) of each team.

Tomorrow the grade 4-6 classes from each campus will head up to Kortright for their own chance to compete in the Pan Am Games and shoot for the gold. We hope the weather is just as beautiful as it was on Monday! On Thursday, each campus will have their own individual celebrations: Branksome with their sundae party, Woburn with their parent open house, and Derrydown with their water day. All camps will have a final day celebration filled with food, games, and bitter sweet goodbyes on Friday. Visit our blog again on Friday for our FINAL Leap Into Literacy blog of the summer. Until then, make sure to keep checking the official Leacock Foundation Twitter and Instagram for live updates!
