Leap Into Literacy: This Week in Review

Written by: Alex Whang

Alex is a Grade 12 student and Leap Into Literacy’s official social media intern for summer 2015. A previous volunteer at the Branksome Hall/Rose Avenue campus for two years, she is excited to be taking on this new role.

One week down, three to go! The first week of Leap Into Literacy was eventful to say the least. Across all three campuses, students, teachers, and volunteers participated in a variety of exciting activities while supporting one another in their literacy skills.

At Woburn this week, a highlight of camp was their “In The Mix” workshop. Students learned a choreographed dance routine which they filmed and made into a music video. It was a day filled with dancing, smiling, and a lot of fun.

From their visit to the Yorkwoods library to the Scientists in School workshop, there was never a dull moment at Derrydown this week. Campers also embraced technology during their literacy blocks by using iPads and a variety of apps. Some of their favourite apps included Pic Collage and iMovie.

Finally, on Canada Day, the Rose Avenue students participated in the annual “Canada Day Games” hosted at Branksome Hall. Thanks to OT Fitness, the afternoon was filled with exercise and even some friendly competition. Campers were split into teams and participated in the bean bag toss, potato sack races, an obstacle course, and more. Check out the video below to see the highlights of the games!

Visiting all three campuses this past week was an absolute pleasure. The enthusiasm, dedication, and kindness at all three camps never ceases to amaze me and I can’t wait for what is in store for these next three weeks. To stay up to date on all things Leap related, don’t forget to follow all Leacock Foundation social medias and visit this blog twice a week for a post every Tuesday and Friday.
