Sister Circles at Get Ahead with Branksome Hall

BH

Over the March break, 17 Branksome Hallgrade 11 students travelled to Queenstown, South Africa. They taught one-week literacy, science, physical education and leadership programmes to classes at Get Ahead. A great feature of the visit was participating in the “sisters” program. Each Branksome student was matched with a grade 11 Get Ahead “sister”. Together, the girls participated in a game drive, a traditional braii and potjke, and a trip to Nelson Mandela’s hometown of Qunu. The sisters also participated in outreach in the nearby community of Ezibeleni that services 1,200 local children affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS. Branksome students speak passionately of having a deeper understanding of the opportunities, or lack thereof, experienced by the people they met and saw on the trip, especially their “sisters”. Many students appreciate how they have been transformed by their experiences.
