Summer 2021 Newsletter Highlights

LEAP into Literacy Summer Camp!

What is this summer’s curriculum theme? An Environment is everything that is around us, which includes both living and non-living things such as soil, water, animals, and plants that adapt to their surroundings. Environmental awareness is understanding how fragile our environment can be and our role in its protection and sustainability.  Through a focus on care, respect, and activism for the environment, the curriculum is meant to nurture students’ perseverance and resilience so that they can see their role in protecting the world around them. Additionally, our theme on the environment will allow students to build the necessary 21st-century skills to adapt in an ever-evolving world.

Students will gain an understanding of the environment and their role in protecting it. The Primary students (Grades 1-3) will develop an interest in and appreciation for the environment by asking questions and sharing ideas. The Junior students (Grades 4 & 5) will go beyond an appreciation for the environment by raising challenging questions that develop environmental ethics and take lead on possible action plans.

We are looking forward to seeing the students’ culminating written and visual presentations.

Hear from some of our Volunteers

My experience as a volunteer at the Leacock Foundation has helped me with my communication and social skills in the virtual setting, and also in person. I used to lack communication skills when I would first meet someone new because of social anxiety. Through volunteering with the Leacock Foundation, I was able to work on that skill and feel more comfortable communicating. I thank the foundation for helping me achieve this and also for giving me the opportunity to volunteer in programs with such amazing, fun kids!

“I’ve put a lot of time, effort, and dedication into the program, and that’s why volunteering at Take the LEAD has been one of my greatest joys. I wanted to make sure that the students would always look forward to coming into the classroom, be excited to learn more about community building, and that they could express their ideas without the worry of being judged.”

I have volunteered at the Leacock Foundation’s programs with a deep passion and dedication. I would always look forward to work in these programs and clubs to serve my community. I am truly grateful to have been a student in the program and a volunteer who was able to give back. I will carry the skills I learned throughout these experiences with me for the future. I have always enjoyed being a part of these programs and will continue to take part in coming opportunities.
