Funded by the Leacock Foundation, Winter School is an intensive two week academic program designed to engage, energize and empower Grade 12 learners at the Get Ahead College as they prepare for the matriculation exam and post-secondary school acceptance.
The Eastern Cape of South Africa consistently has the lowest matriculation pass rate in the country (57%). Despite this, Get Ahead College continues to produce a pass rate over 90%. This success can be traced back to additional support the school provides learners through programs like Winter School.
Taking place at the end of the second term, learners receive additional support in Science, Math and English as well as develop new study strategies and learn to write tertiary study applications. Not only do learners gain practical skills, but they finish the program feeling empowered and confident. In 2016, sixty-two learners benefited from Winter School.
